What is so great about Canada

I'll be honest here and admit that I don't know enough about Canada. I have had plenty of Canadian friends over the years, and they all raved about how great it was, but they would say that wouldn't they. I doubt that there are many people in the world who doesn't believe that they come from the greatest place on earth. I am sure that even the people of Tijuana Mexico believe their city to be a fantastic location; trust me, it isn't. In the interest of fairness though, I have decided to do a little investigation to see just what is so great about Canada. Unfortunately I don't have the money to travel there so I'll just be relying on the wonders of Google.

Well the first thing you find out about Canada is that it is big; in fact it is the second biggest country in the world. This is impressive but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's a great place to go. After all, if a place is made up of boring landscape the fact that it was really big would just be adding to the problem. A little more investigation though tells us that Canada is not only really big, but it is also full of some spectacular scenery. If you travel up to Newfoundland you can even see some icebergs and fjords; I'm not exactly sure what a fjord is, but it certainly sounds impressive. They also seem to have some stunning national parks and if the photos of Alberta are anything to go then well worth a visit.

Some more Google investigation suggests that Canada is a very tolerant country that values its people no matter where they come from originally. This seems likely because I've never met a Canadian who gave the impression that they were suspicious about immigrants taking over their country. Different immigrant groups seem to mix well in Canadian society so they must be doing something right. The friendliness of the population is an important element when it comes to judging the greatness of a country so in this respect Canada is doing well. It also seems to be a peaceful country and this will also add to its charms.

The Canadians also seem to have a lot less crime than some other countries. This will come as a surprise to people like me who get most of their opinions about the country by watching Trailer Park Boys. I have been assured though, that this is not how all Canadians live. In fact it turns out that this TV show does little to explain life in Canada; next they'll be telling me that the TV show Friends wasn't a realistic look at life in America.

So it does seem that Canada has some reasons to claim greatness. Stunning scenery, hospitable people, and low crime are certainly things to be proud about. Maybe in future I'll be less likely to dismiss my Canadian friends when they make claims about their land being one of the nicest places on the planet.

From a European perspective, there is little doubt that Italy is the bedrock of modern society in the West. This is conclusion is primarily due to two facts, the reign of the Romans and the Roman Catholic Church.

In more modern times, Italy changed into a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, together with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor Emmanuel II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito Mussolini established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Fascist Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War Two.

A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and industrial revival followed. Italy was a charter member of the ECU Business Community. It's been at the forefront of ECU business and political unification. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, lethargic industrial expansion, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared to the prosperous north.

If you're going to Italy, these are some basic things you must know.

16. The population of Italy as of 2005 was 58,103,033 people.

17. The flag of Italy was inspired by the French flag brought in 1797 by Napoleon.

Many travelers in search of historic architecture and culture head for Europe. The wonders of Venice, Florence and Rome are well-known, but broader minded travelers are heading to the Far East to enjoy some of the oldest and most incredible architecture in the world. Chiang Mai is just such a destination. It is in northern Thailand, closer to Myanmar and Laos than to Bangkok, which is some 700km (440 miles) further south. Thailand is not just about beaches, shopping and a sordid sex trade, it has some cultural relics which are quite amazing to experience. Although Chiang Mai is Thailand's second city, it is far different from the bustling, cosmopolitan Bangkok. Chiang Mai is famous for its teak forests, working elephants, arts and crafts and its well preserved temples called 'wats'. Golden pagoda-style roofs and white-washed chedi make up the skyline of this historic city.

Chiang Mai's rich cultural heritage stems from the days when it was the capital city of the Lanna Kingdom, over 800 years ago. This well-preserved town is in a fertile valley surrounded by jungle-covered hills. As well as being a Mecca for hikers and backpackers, it has excellent facilities for older tourists too. Many ex-Pats are choosing to retire and settle in this tranquil yet civilized city.

The Old Town is enclosed in a square moat and can be entered by one of the five restored gates. Chiang Mai's temples are far older and much more superior than those found in Bangkok. There are more than 80 Wats in and around Chiang Mai, each with their own particular identity and claim to fame. Probably the oldest temple within the old city is Wat Chiang Man. Built in the 14th century, carved elephants can be seen supporting the structure. It is situated on the site of King Mengrai's camp and is famous for its revered Buddha statues and the tiny crystal figure of Phra Satang Khamani, which is believed to have rain-making powers.

The largest wat in Chiang Mai is Wat Phra Singh, built in 1345 to hold the ashes of King Kam Fu. It has a fine collection of Lanna art and a library of sacred Buddhist scriptures. These impressive buildings are outshone by the famous Phra Viharn Lai Kam, one of Chiang Mai's finest buildings which contains the image of Phra Singh Buddha. The walls are decorated with wonderfully preserved 19th century murals showing the dress, customs and daily life of Chiang Mai more than a century ago. The well-traveled will also be interested to visit the Wat Chet Yot with its seven spires. A sense of deja-vue can be explained as it is a replica of a temple in Myanmar, which is itself a copy of the Mahabodhi temple in India!

Around Chiang Mai there are many places to visit. The imposing mountain of Doi Suthep is just 15 km (10 miles) west of Chiang Mai, with Wat Phrathat perched close to the summit. It can be reached by climbing 290 steps, but most visitors use the funicular in the steamy heat! Erected in the 14th century, the gilded chedi, two lavishly decorated sanctuaries and the cloisters still remain and the panoramic mountain views are equally impressive. Just beyond Doi Suthep is the Phuping Palace, a royal residence with beautiful gardens which are open to the public at the weekends. A couple of miles further on is the Hmaong hill tribe village, an authentic if somewhat commercialized community which is a great place to pick up handmade local crafts of woodcarving, silk, lacquer ware and paper parasols.

For those curious about a different side to Thailand, Chiang Mai is a wonderful experience, particularly popular with those who appreciate history and cultural architecture.

A Romantic Historical Island Getaway in Devon England

You may never have heard of the Burgh Island Hotel, in fact Bigbury on Sea may be a name that is also unfamiliar to you. Most people know about Devon, relatively few have spent a holiday there, but almost everyone has heard of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson.

The Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson escaped the world's press by fleeing to the private twenty six acre private island off the southern coast of Devon, renowned for being an Art Deco retreat.

They certainly didn't go there for a holiday, but you can do as they did and escape the pressures of life by taking a holiday in the newly renovated Burgh Island Hotel.

Burgh island Hotel is an inspiring sort of place which inspired Agatha Christie to pen 'And There Were None' and 'Evil Under the Sun' when she stayed on the island during the 1930's.

Originally built in 1929 by millionaire Archibold Nettlefold as a retreat for his world weary friends, numbering amongst them Noel Coward. When you stay at the Hotel it isn't that hard to imagine Coward sipping gin and tonic in this exclusive millionaire's retreat. This was a time when the Jazz Age Brits came here in numbers, and you can see why.

Today as always the only way of reaching Burgh island at high tide is by a sort of giant sea tractor, or by foot at low tide. Nothing as ordinary as motor cars here!!

You can if you choose travel back to Devon during your holiday in this idyllic spot, but having escaped the rat race why on earth return a moment sooner than absolutely necessary.

Surely the idea is to live like, think like, and be a castaway, albeit a privileged one, with excellent food in the hotel's Palm Court, not forgetting the obligatory Devon afternoon cream tea.

You must at least visit, even if only for cream tea, and if possible ensure you travel at high tide, it is an experience you won't forget, nor will you forget the views.

Known in Dutch as the Achterhuis, the hiding places are preserved and the museum acts as an exhibition space to highlight all forms of persecution and discrimination, as well as an exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank.

10 Vacations Your Kids Will Never Forget

Maybe you discovered the hard way that kids are not exactly content wandering through murky museums or art galleries, gazing at massive cathedrals, or lunching in a lush setting. If you have a couple of 4-5 year olds, maybe you can get by with a few amusement rides and the hotel swimming pool. But once kids hit elementary school through high school, they will make your family vacation miserable if it's boring. I've researched ten super family vacations that are kid-friendly. If you have grade school and high school kids, you may have to split up during the day, but that's okay. So here's my list.

1. Okay, Okay, I'll cave and include Disney World first so you don't keep bugging me. There are far too many attractions to describe in detail. Let's see, there's the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Epcot Center, MGM Studios, Legoland, and much more. In my opinion, the only attraction that's getting a bit old is Epcot Center. The others are terrific. Just a word about the Animal Kingdom. The lodge is decorated with earth tone walls and African ambiance. Thirty-three wild acres contain over 100 different species including impalas, zebras, giraffes, Thompson's gazelle... Your kids will love Orlando.

2. The Out 'n About Treesort in the woods of Takilma, Oregon is a kid's dream. What child hasn't dreamed of living in a tree house? Well, families can actually live in one during their vacation. There are fourteen tree houses sleeping 2-8 people each. Lodgers use rope swings, swinging and suspension bridges, fire poles, and a 160 foot-long zip line to get around! During the day, families can take courses in tree house building or they can go rafting, swimming, or horseback riding, scale a 51-foot rope climbing tree, or take arts and crafts classes. The kids won't stop raving about this place.

3. Atlantis Resort in Reno only cost $850 million to create. The complex includes 20,000 guest rooms, 38 restaurants, 11 exhibit lagoons, 50,000 animals, 11 pool areas, 7 water slides, including a 60-foot Mayan Temple drop into a tunnel submerged in a shark infested lagoon. Kids feel like they've just discovered the infamous lost continent themselves. If you live closer to Florida, there's an Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas which includes many similar attractions to the Reno resort. But while we're talking about good old Nevada we might as well mention the other fabulous kid-friendly resort, Circus Circus. It's only the biggest permanent big top in the world and 3.5 million people flock there each year. Circus performers do their amazing feats non-stop, plus there are 200 arcade games, plus carnival games, and wandering clowns. As if that's not enough, there are over 20 rides in the theme park, miniature golf, and laser tag.

4. Now for something completely different: dude ranches. Tanque Verde Ranch, in Arizona's Sonoran Desert, is one of the best known. Throughout its 640 acres roam over 120 horses. There are riding lessons, as well as every kind of trail ride you can imagine. Naturalist guides offer hikes through desert wilds, yawning canyons, towering cacti, and even secret waterfalls. Kids also can take tennis lessons, swimming, and arts and crafts. Appealing to adults are the delicious steak cook-outs, gourmet picnics, the square dancing, and the beautiful mountains rising in the distance.

5. As more and more vacationers are discovering Alaska, it's becoming a top favorite. Alaska is still a bit wild, with 14 major mountain ranges, glaciers, much wildlife, and almost 34,000 miles of coastline. Ideally, it's best if you can take a land and sea cruise to enjoy the best of both worlds, but do what your pocketbook can afford. Summer is the most comfortable time of the year and there is plenty to do. You can whale-watch or view a vast panoply of wildlife at Denali State Park or another refuge. You can tour a gold mine, count moose, backpack, bird watch, camp, cross country ski, dog sled, hike, salmon fish, visit Mt. McKinley, stargaze, take a riverboat discovery tour, or visit the Imaginarium Science Discovery Center. And this is the short list. I don't think the kids will get bored.

6. New York City is sometimes left out as a kid-friendly place for whatever reason. But there's a lot for kids in New York's Central Park alone. You'll find horse-drawn carriage rides, Heckscher Playground, lake boating, Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater, Central Park Zoo/Tisch Children's Zoo, Billy Johnson Playground, the Wollman Ice Skating Rink, and Belvedere Castle Nature Center. In the Broadway area, artists set up shop on the sidewalks and draw personalized names in a colorful pattern of dragons, pandas, and dolphins. These are extremely popular with kids. But the big draw, of course, is what Broadway offers. Disney invested $34 million to restore the old Ziegfield Follies haunt, the New Amsterdam Theater, to stage The Lion King in 1997. It's still playing to packed audiences. More recent Disney extravaganza include the Little Mermaid. Other popular family-friendly fare includes Mary Poppins, Wicked, and Hairspray. What can I say? This only scratches the surface in regard to what New York offers. Check it out.

7. Most don't realize it, but while some other states slept, South Carolina has been quietly becoming the #2 state for tourism, after Florida. Myrtle Beach alone welcomes over 13,000,000 guests per year. It's a 60-mile stretch of sand called the Grand Strand and features a great beach, water parks, amusement parks, dinner shows, the Hard Rock Park, special hotel and beach activities, and much more. MagiQuest, a major attraction, is a uniquely interactive experience. It takes many elements of a child's fantasy world, combines them, and creates a special place where children can be heroic, valiant, and brave. Children can fight the dragon, run around a Magical Kingdom, wave magic wands, and have lots of fun doing it. MagiQuest even brings out the child in all of us big kids too! So, if you're looking for some great fun, or wish to burn off some of that rambunctious child energy, you've got to take the kids to MagiQuest.

8. I've got to include at least one choice that's considered extra easy on the family budget. It's the YMCA in Winter Park, Colorado and it goes by the name of Rockies' Snow Mountain Ranch. Last time I checked, rates for a two-bedroom cabin with kitchen started at $126 per night. If you cook a lot of your own food, you can get off pretty easy. The area comprises 5,100 acres of pristine near world-class ski resorts. There is hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, a climbing wall, an indoor pool and gym, and horseback riding in the summer. And best for families with kiddies, there's a full kids' program for ages 3 and up. Who likes winter sports? This is for you.

9. Club Med Ixtapa may be the attraction on the list that would appeal most equally to both adults and kids. It is 30 acres along Mexico's western coast that hosts over 20,000 visitors a year, 60 percent of them grade schoolers. Kids of every age group are kept gloriously busy with all sorts of outdoor activities, fun shows, and crafts. If you want, there's even a perfect kids-only dining room. Meanwhile, the parents get to play! There's tennis, scuba, archery, kayaking, water polo, volleyball, and gourmet picnics. Families venturing off the Club Med property can visit the island, take a sunset cruise, go fishing, or take an excursion into the Mexican fishing village of Zihuatenejo. Then melt your troubles away at the Ixtapa Club Spa and get an outdoor massage or whatever else your heart desires.

10. There's a reason Caribbean cruises corner almost 50 percent of the cruise line market in the U.S. It's because the Caribbean offers the vacation so many have dreamed of for years. Imagine yourself on the largest, sleekest ocean liner imaginable, watching a brilliant sunset against rippling waves out of your cabin window. Then imagine eating superb food whenever it strikes your fancy, day or night. Imagine wonderfully entertaining shows, on-shore excursions to lush islands, and see yourself relaxing or engaging in activities according to your fancy. Then realize that, if you wish, the kids will be engaged for much of each day in a children's program tailor-made just for them. This is what you call an all-inclusive vacation. What more could you want?

Florida is a great place to visit with a group of close friends. In fact Florida is one of the most fabulous places to vacation in the country. It is pretty easy to find a place to stay, but during the peak season it can be more difficult. You best bet is to make your reservations ahead of time. You can make reservations using any of the online travel sites, but you should make sure you shop around a bit to make sure you get a really good deal.

If you do decide to visit Fort Myers with a group of friends you may want to avoid spring break. Although Spring break is not a traditional spring break town, it still draws a crowd during spring break.
